This beautiful Sam Maloof / Hal Taylor inspired Spalted Maple rocker certainly isn't short on character. By pure chance, there is even a maple sugar tap hole at the top of the left leg. I have a cross section from the scrap showing how the hole had grown over after the tap had been removed. Spalting occurs after the tree had died and bacteria begin to decompose the wood. A lot of repair work went into ensuring the wood would last and the chair has been load tested in excess of 300 pounds. The chair is sized for a 5'-6" to 6'-0" individual but it really depends on leg length. The back braces are bent laminated with a Purpleheart front, a core of Ash (same material used to make archery bows) and the back face is Spalted Maple. The braces not only provide lumbar support but they flex with your back. The center braces provide more flexibility ensuring that all seven braces cradle your back, you'll soon forget it's made from wood. Free freight to anywhere in the continental United States. Shipping elsewhere will cost a bit more.
I can make something similar in a different size or species of wood so if you're interested in something else please send me an email.
